Take the brief.

The questions to ask on the first call, in one form. It tells you what's still missing before you start searching, then makes a one-page brief to send back so the client can confirm it.

The rules

How it works.

Most searches that go wrong were wrong at the brief: a must-have nobody mentioned, a salary that doesn't match the market, an interview panel with no dates. This form asks the same questions every time and tells you which answers are missing.

  • Must-haves are what a candidate can't be offered the job without. More than five and the tool asks you to test them: which could a strong candidate be missing and still get an offer? Those are nice-to-haves.
  • Interview dates held in the client's diary before the search starts are the simplest way to keep good candidates moving.
  • Feedback within is a promise to ask for. Candidates you're keeping warm need an answer.

The printout is a one-page brief to send back to the client with "is this right?". It's also the brief our interview kit is built on. Nothing you type leaves your browser; it's kept on this device so a refresh doesn't lose it.
